CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: (Mr.) Scratch.
• Character Age: Technically Scratch is a creation and can be considered ageless, but physically/mentally he is mid-to-late 30s.
• Character Canon: Alan Wake (Remedy Connected Universe).
• Canon Point: Alan Wake's American Nightmare, just before his death.

• Character History: Here.

• Character Personality:

— Effortless: Scratch is a man that exudes confidence, and, with that, there's an easiness in the way he does practically everything. As he says himself, he has no problem being the centre of attention. Where others may let their own timidness hold them back, Scratch has a certain boldness. He approaches people without fear of rejection, such as strangers at parties, or showing himself in part to Alice Wake (aka the wife of the man that Scratch is a doppelgänger of). The easy way Scratch approaches life is also what allows him to see the fun in things. He's very unapologetic about who he is, so there's nothing holding him down. He's often smiling and laughing, finding humour in the situations he creates. While it's not exactly morally positive, the most apparent examples of this is the way he has fun at the expense of other people, whether it's the way he leads Alan Wake on through a series of videos or uses others as tools to make things more amusing to himself.
— Charming: Taking the above into consideration, it's probably no surprise that Scratch is a charming individual. After all, people are drawn to confidence, and it surely helps that he has Alan's fame to give him a boost in that department. There are a few shown instances of Scratch drawing in women who find him to be instantly likeable and trustworthy. One of those women felt comfortable and safe enough with Scratch to immediately return to his motel room with him, while another was drawn in so fully that she immediately agreed to his demands that the lights must never be turned on because it would result in something bad. Another person, a local scientist, speaks blatantly of his charming demeanour and how it led her to letting him into the observatory she works at. It goes without saying that Scratch has a natural way of pulling others into his circle, making them see him as someone who can be easily trusted, as well as someone that people would look to for assistance. No doubt this is something that would come in handy in an environment like Sing.
— Cunning: To say that Scratch is clever would perhaps be an understatement. His voice actor compares Scratch to a cat playing with a ball of yarn, so there's the immediate idea that he embodies feline traits such as awareness and being alert. While he can have unpredictable moments, there's a methodical nature to quite a bit of what he does. Things of importance are always done with a reason behind it (he got his way into the observatory to find and decode something in the stars), and he thinks several steps ahead. Knowing that Alan would come try to get in the way of things, Scratch outfitted a time loop to keep Alan detained to buy himself the time he needed to pursue his own objective. It's easy for this to go missed by others, especially if they only see him acting on his whims. However, if someone cares to stick around and really watch him, they'd see he's acutely aware of what's going on around him. This isn't something he ever tries to hide - again, he's unapologetically the way he is - it's just easy to be blinded by his aforementioned effortless charm.

— Narcissistic: When it comes to Scratch, arrogant would be too kind a word. He takes the idea of arrogance up to the extreme, where all his easy confidence and charming attitude can actually begin to work against him. It's probably no surprise that he veers into manipulative behaviour once he's got someone under his thumb. The woman who believed the lights couldn't be turned on was fully warped by Scratch, both mentally and physically as he infected her with darkness. As well, much like his counterpart, Alan, believes he's the only person capable of seeing things through to the end, Scratch believes it of himself. He's a herald of something much bigger than himself, and he's the one who can bring it to fruition. He also feels that no one can beat him. Never does he assume Alan might break the time loop, or come out on top. According to Scratch, he's better at being Alan than Alan is, so how could Alan ever truly best him? That hubris is the crux of his downfall. Scratch becomes too focused on taunting the hero of the story - demeaning behaviour is another classic trait of narcissism - to see that he lost his own thread.
— Temperamental: Another tidbit about Scratch given is that "you never know if he's going to kiss you or hit you", and that unpredictability about him is very much at the heart of him taking up the villain role. This might be why it's also Scratch's most obvious and prominent trait. Where he he makes plans and puts method to his madness on the more serious things he pursues, when it comes to the more trivial aspects of life, his mood swings are in constant motion. For example, in one instant he's buzzing from a party. He's happy about the party and even brags about it, and then hardly a minute later, he deems the noise from the party to be unacceptable and puts an immediate end to it. The next thing you know, he's playing the same song in his motel room, by himself, having a solo dance party. There's little reason as to why he chooses to change his opinion in such a volatile manner. Even those he works his charms on have suddenly found themselves on the opposite side of things without warning, and this behaviour plays a large part in promotional material presented by the character himself. He's the sort of person you quickly learn to walk on eggshells around.
— Lacking Empathy (cw: mentions of murder, actions relating to emotional abuse): This one probably comes as no surprise following everything else listed here. Scratch cares about no one but Scratch. He has no interest in forming sincere connections, and he views relationships as merely a means to an end. If he's not benefitting from it, he doesn't want it. That said, to Scratch a benefit can simply be amusement. He boasts a lot about picking up with Alan's most prominent relationships and playing the long con just to see them fall apart, ruining both them along with Alan's reputation. It should also be said that a large part of what corrupted Scratch were the overwhelming rumours of Alan being somewhat unhinged and maybe being a serial killer. Anyone can be a victim in Scratch's eyes. There's never any glimmer of remorse when it comes to his actions. The woman mentioned way up above that came back to his motel room ended up being victim to one of Scratch's little self-satisfying games, where he kept looking back to the camera he set up before killing her. After he imitated her dying sounds, he sat down beside her and couldn't stop relaying how cool he thought that was. All while the camera was still rolling.

• Character Skills:

• Resourcefulness.
• Firearms.
• Knife skills.

• Character Inventory:

— ITEM ONE: A framed photo of Alice Wake.
— ITEM TWO: A switchblade.
— ITEM THREE: A wedding ring.

• Important Notes:
- Scratch is functionally human but possesses certain supernatural qualities thanks to being something that was created and corrupted. This will require some nerfs. Scratch will not, understandably, be able to fluidly move between dimensions. He'll be very much stuck in Milton and the surrounding area. Bullets/knives/etc will now be able to cause him harm. He will also no longer be able to summon twisting shadows, nor will he be able to infect others with the darkness and essentially turn them into shadowy zombies. However, to his benefit, this all also means that daylight/very bright light won't effect him negatively.
- Scratch isn't what you'd consider a Good Person. An opt-out option has been added, allowing other players to decide their level of comfort with interactions. While this is a horror survival game, I don't want to assume that everyone is automatically all right with certain things.
